In the book of Micah we are commanded to ‘Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God’. In Galatians Paul recalls being encouraged by the other apostles to ‘remember the poor’ as he preached the gospel. His response was to declare that he was most eager to do just that!
These weekly tips are to help us start seeking justice wherever we are. They are small, practical steps that we can all do and that together will make a huge difference. I want to take my personal justice seeking up a level this year and so I am going to try something new each week.

Act Justly Now- Habit 3: If only
I spent last week not buying my customary on the way to work coffee. When I passed the coffee shop I prayed and I donated the money I would have spent to Tearfund. The surprising thing about this was that something that should have been very easy was actually hard. I have grown used to that coffee at that time. It helps set up the day. I missed it and resented not having it. I guess this is part of the value of fasting- it reveals our hearts, the things that really matter to us. So I learned that connecting with the last, least and lost or having a coffee was a real choice for me. That I am sometimes better at the big sacrifices than the little commitments. The battle to act justly is played out in all the little decisions of the day.
What am I going to do this week?
This week I am going to join with others to fight for justice. Small acts of kindness, generosity and sacrifice are necessary at the personal level but sometimes all of us individuals need to come together to ask for a big change. One that can make a difference to millions, that changes the shape of the world. This week is about campaigning.
How am I going to do this?
I am going to join the IF campaign. Over 100 organisations have come together to end hunger. Over the next year there are key moments, like the G8 summit in the UK, where we need to remind our politicians that we care for more than just ourselves and ask them to take action so that no one goes to bed hungry. Every person joining makes a difference. Numbers matter. You can join here
1 in 8 people (which is the same as the whole populations of all of Europe, USA, Canada and Australia) will go to bed hungry tonight. Over 2 million children will die as a result of malnutrition this year (that’s one every 15 seconds). You can read a short piece about the campaign at Rhythms.
